Baby Formula NEC Claims Attorneys

Cow’s Milk-Based Formula Linked to Premature Infant Illness

Baby formula derived from cow’s milk is one of the most popular varieties worldwide and has been widely used for premature and full-term newborns. In 2011, researchers began uncovering a link between cow’s milk-based baby formula and Necrotizing Enterocolitis (NEC), an illness affecting premature babies.

Doctors aren’t sure why, but premature babies who get human milk from donors have a lower risk of NEC than those who receive bovine-based baby formula. Continued observation has only strengthened the link between cow’s milk-based formula and NEC.

NEC is a severe condition for premature newborns, who have a weak immune response and can’t fight bacterial infections on their own. Doctors aren’t sure what triggers NEC, but the disease leads to gut inflammation due to excessive bacteria, which can then spread to the rest of the abdomen. This is treatable, but it requires hospitalization; in the most severe cases, it requires surgery, which exposes infants to other risks. Now, families are bringing forward claims against popular baby formula brands and medical professionals who harmed their children.

If your baby took cow’s milk-based formula and developed NEC, speak with Handler, Henning & Rosenberg LLC at (888) 498-3023 as soon as possible.

What Types of Baby Formula Are Linked to NEC?

Cow’s milk-based baby formula makes up 80% of all baby formulas on the market. However, the potential link between NEC and bovine baby formula has been known since 2011; that makes manufacturers and medical professionals liable for continuing to sell/give potentially harmful baby formula to parents.

Popular baby formulas made with cow’s milk include:

  • Enfamil
  • Similac
  • Gerber
  • Earth’s Best
  • Parent’s Choice
  • Happy Baby

Whether or not a formula is ‘organic’ doesn’t play a role in the risk faced by premature babies. The only relevant fact is that bovine-based baby formula puts premature babies at risk, and both manufacturers and medical professionals are responsible for changing their advertising or medical practice accordingly.
